We have had so much fun completing the 16 energy conservation challenges set out by the #Energy Diet Challenge:
 http://energydiet.canadiangeographic.ca/

I strive to bring resources like the Canadian Geographic’s Classroom Energy Challenge for the students to know that they can have an impact and be empowered to make thoughtful everyday decisions that connect them to the larger world. It is incredibly powerful to see students feel that their choices make a global difference.

The students created a wall chart to keep track of their challenges. Students decided to take on the leadership roles for organizing specific challenges.

There was so much excitement as the students took action!

There is also so much work that they were excited to learn and do:
Story Time- Books:
Story Time - letters to our future selves:
Go outside for 1 hour No Power:
Growing Plants for Get Growing Challenge:
Buckle Up Challenge:
We wrote our own energy rap. (which I have to say was mostly just so much fun. We discovered that rap writing was more challenging then it seems!)

Welcome to our energy course.
Listen we'll tell you from the source!
Now I've got a question for you,
Think about it, what would you do?

Gas impacts the environment,
 being aware is a requirement!
We could use eco-friendly ways
We could have better days.

We use gas and electricity too!!!
Just why do we waste it out of the blue?
So let's look back at the things we’ve done.
We built roads and houses, for our daughters and sons.

Do we keep our planet a healthy place?
make a change in energy waste.
We can start by turning off the light,
the car, tap, and do what is right.

This is different, now you see,
it is important, even more than me.
Together we are better than one, that’s a fact.
Without us the environment will be attacked.

We could save it, or lose it.
What should we do?

This summer I had the amazing opportunity to visit the oil sands in northern Alberta through Inside Education. http://www.insideeducation.ca/teacher-professional-development/ I really learned how important energy literacy is!
